The main objective of any good curriculum is to further the student’s growth, understanding and knowledge in ways that contribute positively to the student’s ways of thinking, perspectives, attitudes and overall skills. Necessarily, an all-inclusive curriculum would then have to include what is to be learned and why, what methods of teaching and materials will be utilized to best reach the desired learning levels and an assessment strategy or strategies to know if, when and to what degree the required learning has taken place. As such, there has to be regular curriculum review and revision to ensure the correct progression of the curricular framework, an established staff development plan to assist teachers in learning the correct instructional methodologies in reaching the objectives set by the curriculum and lastly, an aligned assessment system to determine the success of achieving these objectives. To date, and as the curriculum of the school has been revamped from a text-book driven curriculum to one that is standard-based (with benchmarks), no formal policy of curriculum revision has been put into place, although the Heads of Departments have already checked their departments’ individual curriculum twice during the academic year 2013-2014and have made amendments accordingly. These amendments have initiated a need to purchase more resources to help accommodate the minor changes made.

Talaee Al-Noor International School’s curriculum is standards-based (with benchmarks) and it is according to Common Core Standards. It is set up to ensure that every student is provided a specified and balanced program that gives him/her a complete education. The curriculum advances the total development of the student, be it intellectually, culturally, mentally or physically, all within the norms and values of the Egyptian society that comply with the Ministry of Education’s requirements. All topics (i.e. syllabus / curriculum) covered within all the subjects given to students have to comply with the Ministry of Education’s requirements and must meet their approval. The curriculum also should prepare the student for his/her future life, i.e. further educational levels (such as undergraduate and graduate studies), as well as arming the student with basic guidelines and knowledge needed to succeed. The curriculum should also prepare the students for such exams as the SAT I, SAT II and TOEFL, which will be required for their further educational experience.

To provide each student in school with a general and complete education in terms of general guidelines as to what students should know and be able to do (standards), a general curricular framework of core subject areas, specifically English language, science, mathematics, history-social studies, social sciences, foreign language, fine arts (art and music) and physical education was established after careful research, advice received from various educational consultants and checking with other accredited and leading American-curriculum teaching schools in Egypt. Concurrently, Arabic and religion is given to all Egyptian students, in addition to social studies in Arabic and Civics for 12th graders. The curriculum framework is based on what K-12 students are expected to learn. The curriculum does not specify a daily or weekly outline for teachers to follow, nor is it textbook-driven. On the other hand, it simply lays the foundation for what students are expected to learn in terms of skills and general knowledge within each subject area. Whereas the Heads of Departments have developed individual standards and benchmarks for each core subject area, each and every curriculum established includes basic, common concepts such as critical thinking and understanding, problem-solving techniques based on theoretical and real-life problems, conceptual understanding and meaning orientation rather than rote memorization, teaching across the curriculum, and hands-on learning which helps students make connections to their own experiences thus promoting an advanced level of understanding.

Each Head of Department ensures that the curriculum for that learning area is developed and successively linked in all grade levels in such a way that enables the students to understand the progression, the coherence and the link between the topics taken in the different grade levels within that learning area, in addition to the link between all the different learning areas that are taught. To achieve this goal, all Heads of Departments ensure that:

* Each curriculum area has clearly defined objectives and aims

* There are regular meetings between the Heads of Departments and the teachers to ensure the correct progression within the learning area and if needed, to discuss the best way to perform and fix a problem when there is one.

* There is a global view of teaching, which entails constantly checking the student’s progression of knowledge and applying an evaluation of this progression between the different levels of the school (elementary, middle and high school).

Talaee Al-Noor International School is aware that the way and the place the students are taught is an important matter. In order for the students to be in the best position to learn, the teachers should, through the curricula:

Provide the students with a safe and nurturing environment:, both physically and psychologically.

Build and maintain a good relationship with the students, in a way that will help them have a positive image of themselves, feel self-confident and have good self-esteem.

The main aim of Talaee Al-NoorInternational School’s education is to bring each student to the best level of knowledge they can reach. To achieve that, it is understood that each learning area must emphasize basic skills, such as listening, writing and reading skills, ability to apply and integrate technology across the curricula, communicate clearly both through speech and writing, be able to apply analytic and creative thinking skills, and having the ability to research, discern and record information from various sources.

DISCIPLINE POLICY

Students expect to attend classes in a well-ordered atmosphere conducive to learning.
